Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is a diversified and one of the oldest branches of Engineering that encompasses study in the fields of Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Construction Engineering & Management, and various other specialized areas. Civil Engineering mainly involves the planning, analysis, and design of different infrastructure projects, and their implementation through a sustainable approach on a turn-key basis.

About the Department

The departmental facilities of the college include a state-of-the-art CAD lab equipped with industry- standard software such as AutoCAD, Revit, ETABS, and Primavera, enabling students to gain hands-on proficiency in structural modelling, building information modelling (BIM), structural analysis & design, and project planning & scheduling. The department also houses a state-of-the-art Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory, along with dedicated Highway Engineering and Concrete Technology Laboratories, equipped to carry out soil investigation, pavement material testing, and concrete mix design and quality assessment. In addition, the Environmental Engineering and Fluid Mechanics Laboratories are well-equipped with sophisticated instruments for water and wastewater analysis, hydraulic experimentation, and environmental quality testing, giving students comprehensive hands-on exposure across the core domains of civil engineering.
Our faculty are actively associated with R&D and consultancy work for the continual improvement of teaching quality. Faculty members contribute to academic development by publishing books and presenting papers at international conferences, national conferences, and in peer-reviewed journals, while also securing multiple KSCST (Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology) funded projects that encourage students to pursue innovative, research-driven solutions to real-world engineering problems. The departments commitment to academic excellence is reflected in its students performance as well, with one of our students securing the 7th Rank at the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) level, a testament to the quality of teaching and mentorship provided by the department.
The department follows a multidisciplinary approach to engineering education, offering students the opportunity to pursue Honours and Minor Degrees alongside their core curriculum. This allows students to gain specialized depth in emerging areas while broadening their exposure beyond traditional civil engineering boundaries. The curriculum actively encourages collaboration with other disciplines, integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), 3D Printing, and Sensor Technologies into civil engineering applications such as structural health monitoring, smart infrastructure, predictive maintenance, and automated construction techniques, preparing students for the future of the construction and infrastructure industry.
To bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, the department organizes industrial visits to several renowned infrastructure projects, including the Linganamakki Dam, Varahi Hydroelectric Project, Kaiga Nuclear Power Plant, and Kadra Power Plant. These visits provide students with firsthand exposure to large-scale civil engineering works in hydropower, dam engineering, and power plant infrastructure, deepening their understanding of real-world design, construction, and operational challenges.
The department also actively trains and mentors students to participate in various state-level and national-level competitions, fostering a spirit of innovation, technical competence, and healthy competition. These initiatives help students apply classroom learning to practical challenges, build problem-solving skills, and gain recognition for their technical capabilities on wider platforms. The Department of Civil Engineering proudly hosted an International Conference on Interdisciplinary Approaches in Civil Engineering for Sustainable Development, organized under the ambit of the G20 Civil 20 (C20) engagement group. The conference brought together academicians, researchers, policymakers, and industry practitioners from across the globe to deliberate on sustainable, resilient, and interdisciplinary solutions to the challenges facing modern infrastructure development. The event was held under the distinguished guidance of Prof. N. Vinod Chandra Menon, a Founder Member of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Government of India, where he served with the rank of Union Minister of State from 2005 to 2010. With over three decades of experience in disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, and public policy, Prof. Menons mentorship lent the conference deep insight into building disaster-resilient infrastructure as a cornerstone of sustainable development. The conference also benefited from the eminent presence of Dr. Sreevalsa Kolathayar, Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, who is recognized globally for his contributions to geotechnical engineering, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable infrastructure, and brought valuable research perspectives to the discussions, further strengthening the conferences interdisciplinary outlook.
